Your Water Filters Recommendations, Graded on One Standard
The water filter evidence guide
Your water filters.
Checked against the certification databases.
Two weeks ago I asked what water filter you use. 167 of you named one, 65 brands in all. I took every brand named by two or more people, 29 of them, and checked the specific models against the NSF, WQA and IAPMO listings, the published lab reports, and what the box claims. Each is kept separate on every card.
Find your model, see the grade, and open the evidence behind it. Green badges link to the certifier's own listing. Red means a claim was not credited in this review; open the badge to see why.
Hormone Specialist does not sell water filters. No affiliate links. No brand paid me, sent me a unit, or saw this before it went up. Corrections from manufacturers are welcome and will be posted with the date.
Tap a badge for its exact scope and source. Grey means nothing was found, not zero reduction. Certified and lab-tested badges earn points. A dashed half-filled badge is a reported reduction under 50%, or one that leaves the water above the federal limit; it earns nothing. A red badge is a claim that was not credited, whether untested, mixed, or unresolved, and the badge says which. The checkbox filter matches live certification listings only.
Berkey: Phoenix configurations
Travel, Big and Royal Berkey with Phoenix PGF9-2
Phoenix PGF9-2 has a 1,050-gallon certified chlorine rating. The broader tests below are separate from that certification; PF-2 add-ons are excluded.
Results that matter
- Phoenix’s dealer-published laboratory summary attributes results to CVR/RAYNU: named metals >99.5%, five PFAS >99.8%, selected VOCs/drugs >99.9%, and chloramine-containing panel >99%. Most are initial tests; the separate PFOA/PFOS test extends to 396 gallons. These are reported laboratory results, not certified health claims. Source

- Regulatory action. In May 2023 EPA Region 8 issued a Stop Sale, Use, or Removal Order (FIFRA-08-2023-0038) to Berkey International, following a similar order to the Pueblo, Colorado seller after a November 2022 inspection. EPA's position: Black Berkey elements contain silver and are marketed with antimicrobial claims (pathogen removal, silver used to self-sterilize the element), which makes them pesticides under FIFRA; they are not registered and their labels carry no establishment number, so EPA treats them as unregistered, misbranded pesticides and ordered sales of Black Berkey products, including the Travel, Big, Royal, Imperial and Crown systems, to stop. Berkey challenged the order in court; on 18 September 2026 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit upheld it, finding EPA had reason to believe the filters were unregistered, misbranded pesticidal products (court record). The order concerns pesticide registration and antimicrobial claims; it does not report a measured contaminant-reduction failure. Read the EPA order (PDF)
- Envirotek report 14-260 (2014) names Black Berkey: arsenic 312→<2 µg/L (>99.35%); fluoride 8.1→<0.1 mg/L (>98.76%); chlorine 2.1→<0.1 (>95.2%); chloramine 3.2→<0.1 (>96.87%). It also reports lead and other-metal reductions. Several printed “99.9%” claims exceed what the reporting limits demonstrate. These short laboratory tests do not prove performance through the advertised 6,000 gallons. Source

Santevia publishes a results table attributed to ALS Environmental and/or its own laboratory, without per-row attribution. Credited under the lab-evidence rule: exact product, numeric influent and effluent, reduction ≥50%. Manufacturer-published, not certified. Source
- Nitrate 25.8→16.9 mg/L (34.5%) and nitrite 3.59→2.24 (37.6%) in Santevia’s published table. Below the 50% floor for laboratory credit.
- Other metals: cadmium 0.273→<0.000005 mg/L, mercury 0.01→<0.000005, copper 3.1→<0.01 (each >99.9%); credited. PFAS feed values are below the reporting limit and VOC feeds are omitted, so those rows establish nothing. The row labeled arsenic carries chloramine’s CAS number and test method, so it is not credited until corrected.

Santevia publishes a results table attributed to ALS Environmental and/or its own laboratory, without per-row attribution. Rows with numeric influent/effluent and ≥50% reduction earn maker-commissioned lab credit under the published rule; PFAS here means PFOA/PFOS.
Letter unchanged across the full displayed input range. Open the calculation below for the exact bounds.
Results that matter
- Santevia’s published Glass/MINA table (ALS Environmental and/or Santevia’s own laboratory; rows are not individually attributed): lead 0.14→0.000969 mg/L (99.31%); fluoride 2.13→<0.05 (>97.65%, not >99.9%); chloramine 2.84→0.09 (96.83%); PFOA 0.298→<0.01 µg/L (>96.64%); PFOS 0.73→<0.01 (>98.63%); chlorine 2.05→<0.02 (>99%); cadmium 98.5%, mercury 99.7%, copper 99.7%. Credited under the lab-evidence rule. Manufacturer-published, not certified. Source
- VOC influents are omitted from the table, so VOC reduction cannot be established and earns no credit.

- Measurlabs ID 15544 (December 2024): reductions for selected drug analytes in three sample filters. Many influents were about 0.043–0.057 µg/L with effluents <0.010; those limits establish roughly >77–82%, not “99.9%.” Source
- Mixed PFAS result, no credit: PFOA feed 0.0129 µg/L became 0.0269 / 0.0006 / 0.0014 across three filters; PFOS feed 0.0120 became 0.1576 / 0.0021 / 0.0009. The first sample was higher than the feed. The other two reduced these compounds. Source

GE GXWH40L
GXWH40L housing; identify FXHTC carbon or FXHSC sediment cartridge
GE describes the system as reducing sediment and impurities; no exact system-and-cartridge performance certificate was established in this review. A retailer listing and the housing alone do not establish the reduction scope.
Results that matter
- GE’s product page says the system filters water “at the main supply reducing sediment and impurities.” No matching performance certificate was established here, so no contaminant category is credited or listed as claimed. Source

Start with your water.
A broad grade cannot tell you what is in your tap water. Before choosing a filter, find out what you are actually trying to remove, then match that contaminant to the exact system, cartridge and certification claim.
- On municipal water: read your utility’s annual Consumer Confidence Report. It lists what was detected and at what level.
- On a private well: the utility report does not cover you. EPA recommends testing at least yearly for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids and pH, plus arsenic, metals or other contaminants based on local risks. This guide’s score does not cover bacteria or viruses, so treat that separately.
- Older plumbing: lead comes from pipes and fixtures after the water leaves the utility, so test at your own tap.
- Then use the checkboxes above to show only filters with a live certification for that contaminant.
My setup
Waterdrop G3P600
Six certified categories on the current IAPMO listings plus a maker-published VOC test. Grade B, 50 out of 100, with about $145 a year in replacement filters at one gallon a day. I added the remineralizing cartridge, which changes the cost and the final TDS.
Comparing feed-water and filtered-water TDS helps estimate membrane rejection. A TDS reading does not identify individual contaminants.
How my score is tallied
This is my score, not an industry standard. I decided what matters and how much, and every number is on the card so you can check my math. One sentence version: a filter earns points for what it has proven, not for what it advertises. 80 points for proven reduction, 10 for materials, 10 for yearly replacement cost. The grades do not predict whether your water is safe or whether a filter fits your particular water problem, and the 13 categories do not assess bacteria, virus or protozoa protection beyond the cyst claim.
Evidence: 80 points
For each of 13 categories, certification documented for the named configuration earns 1 unit; published laboratory results earn 0.6 when certification is not credited; unsupported claims earn 0. Evidence points = 80 × (certified categories + 0.6 × laboratory categories) ÷ 13. No category is counted twice.
Lab-evidence rule (published 15 September 2026). A category earns 0.6 laboratory credit when a published result names the exact product or a family the maker explicitly applies to it, reports influent and effluent in consistent units with the influent above the reporting limit, and shows at least 50% reduction. A result under 50%, or one whose effluent stays above the federal drinking-water limit at a comparable challenge level, is shown as partial and earns nothing. Whether the laboratory is named affects the note on the badge, not the credit: a maker-published summary with unnamed laboratories and a signed accredited report both count as maker-commissioned. The same rule was applied to every brand; Santevia and Ecofiltro were regraded when it was written down.
Lab evidence comes in two colors. Amber is manufacturer-commissioned testing, at an accredited lab or in a maker-published summary; ongoing certification oversight was not established. Blue is a test someone independent ran, usually one unit and one tap. Both earn the same 0.6 because neither is a certification; the color tells you who paid. A summary with unnamed laboratories is weaker than a signed original, and the card says so. Single-sample and start-of-life results do not prove performance through the cartridge's life. Open the badge for the actual numbers.
Green badges link to NSF, WQA or IAPMO listings. Purple badges link to dated certification copies or performance sheets whose live-directory status was not independently confirmed; they earn documented-certification credit, and their date/status stays visible. Materials-only listings and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 lead-content certification earn no water-contaminant reduction credit. Lab and product links are labeled separately.
Cost, materials and score ranges
Cost uses 1 US gallon/day (365/year), current one-time prices, annualized consumables and the earlier applicable volume/calendar limit. Bundle/subscription savings are excluded unless explicitly stated. Membranes are amortized. Taxes, shipping, installation, electricity, wastewater and upfront system purchase are excluded. Assumed maintenance scenarios and manufacturer-rated capacities are identified; actual water can shorten filter life.
Annual replacement bands: ≤$60 = 10 points; >$60–$120 = 8; >$120–$200 = 6; >$200–$300 = 4; >$300 = 2. If no complete annual price is established, both extremes (2–10 points) are calculated. This is a sensitivity range, not an invented cost estimate. A stable letter can still be established; a boundary-crossing range shows both letters.
Materials preference: no plastic contact = 10; some plastic contact = 6; plastic reservoir/path = 3. Glass or steel storage alone does not establish a plastic-free path. Where configuration or minor fittings remain unresolved, the displayed range includes the applicable alternatives. These points are editorial preference, not a measured health risk.
Round the total once, then assign A ≥65; B 45–64; C 25–44; D <25. Whole-house and shower systems are reviewed for their own scope, outside the drinking-water grade.
What the categories mean
Lead, PFAS, fluoride, arsenic, nitrate/nitrite, cysts, VOCs, selected drugs, microplastics, chlorine, chloramine, TDS and other metals. Group credit means evidence for at least one relevant member, not every substance in the group. Lead and arsenic are excluded from “other metals” to avoid double counting. Arsenic species, PFAS compounds, VOC surrogate scope and microplastic particle size matter.
A non-detect is a reporting limit, not zero. Where a table’s percentage disagrees with its measurements, the before/after values control. A sample already below a reporting limit does not prove removal. Mixed or adverse results remain visible. Surrogate experiments are identified and must not be described as tests of every represented substance.
Model scope and corrections
Certifications belong to the exact system and replacement cartridge, not an entire brand. Reference configurations are named for prices. A sibling may have the same certification scope and different cost. Original comment counts affect only the “Most named” order. For corrections, supply the exact model, original report and current certifier record.
